Smooth Operator...

Hi Everyone,

Mischief was around at Chanonry the other day, in very close company of a lovely female dolphin called Arabic. The two of them came past me at the Point and it looked to me like Mischief was using some of his smooth chat-up lines on her.

Mischief is such a great character...what female could resist his charms?

Best Wishes,

Charlie.

    Hi Michelle,

Great to hear from you again. We think that male bottlenoses become mature enough to breed in their early teens. Mischief has been well known since the studies started in 1990 so he is a mature dolphin and could easily be a father many times over.

Rainbow has had three known calves, the first was ID# 569 born in 1995 but this young dolphin didn't stay around long before going off on it's own. Prism was born in 2001 and he is still around, I see him quite often - a crazy young sub-adult dolphin. Raindrop was born in 2005 and he vanished when he was still young (about 2 and a bit years old)and unfortunately we have not been able to recognise him in any of our photos. This does not mean bad news, as young dolphins, especially males pick up marks on their dorsal fins very quickly (Kesslets son Charlie is a prime example)and can hide themselves within the population - so yes, they are all independent. Time for Rainbow to have another if you ask me.....Are you listening Rainbow?

    Best Wishes,

    Charlie.

    Hi Charlie

    Hi Debbie,

Great to hear from you. Rising tide, just after low tide is when the salmon start to run past the tip of the Point at Chanonry, I normally advise people to get themselves settled for low tide and wait for a few hours and see what happens. Dolphins might be hanging around at low tide so that's a bonus as they are really close to the beach. I'll e-mail you tide times for April.

    Best Wishes,

    Charlie.
